Put a crowning touch on your room with one of these artful creations

Extra-wide millwork and a single wall painted a high-gloss royal blue create an eye-catching backdrop for a recessed bed in this guest room illuminated by a contemporary drum shade with diffuser.

“I have no rules when it comes to decorating, and my taste is a little bit of everything,” homeowner and designer Christine Hughes says. “I’m a collector of art, of books, and of things. If something speaks to me, I’ll find a way to make it work.”  In her living room, an antique Biedermeier table pairs up with a collection of Christine’s own original abstract artwork and a lacy table lamp with a sleek gray shade and bright blue finial.

Landscape lighting can transform your property, enhancing its character—and your enjoyment of being outdoors.

A lovely beaded chandelier adds romantic whismy without distracting from the nature-inspired palette in this lakeside retreat. “The wood is so active, there wasn’t a need for extraneous visual elements or a lot of movement,” says interior designer Susan Ferrier.

Designer Gail Plechaty used marble, metal, and crystal accents to add shimmer to this gorgeous room. The bleached finish of an antique French commode enhances the room’s light, airy ambience. An antique sconce glistens above an antique demilune table.

These sleek light fixtures evoke feelings of comfort and warmth.

An intrepid palette of color and pattern paint this historic Savannah rowhouse into the modern design era while maintaining a canvas of its past. A palette of white enlivened by turquoise and made dramatic by black plays out this guest room. A high-gloss lanquer finish turns a wiry chandelier into a focal point.

This week I’m going to tell you about the continuing saga that has been devising a lighting plan for our beach house.  Because the house was…

Dark wood cabinetry, concrete counters, glass tiles, and wooden pendants resembling assembled driftwood give this beach house bathroom a contemporary, spa-like feel.

“The homeowners wanted a mix of comfort and classic elegance,” interior designer Liz Williams says. “It can be hard to meld the two things. But by using a sophisticated color palette and paying attention to detail, we were able to make even the most casual spaces in the house feel elegant.”

An artisan-made iron chandelier echoes the rustic sophistication of the ladder-back chairs that gather around the pedestal table in this breakfast nook.

“I love a white kitchen, and this kitchen has a blend of the things I wanted to use throughout the house,” says interior designer Hillary Rondero, pointing to the brass swing-arm lights, chrome and gilded finishes, and the sunset hues in the plush runner. To get the desired effect from the overhead light, Hillary trimmed away excess capiz shells and reshaped the kicky chandelier so it better fit the space above the island.

Suspended from the high ceilings, transitional chandeliers underscore this vacation home’s sophisticated yet understated style. A 10-foot-long farm table made from old wood anchors the dining area.

“I always try bring a little sparkle, a little nature, and a subtle animal reference to every room,” the designer says. A vintage campaign chest and a weathered oak dining table supply traditional forms that counter the room’s contemporary elements. “I love that chandelier,” Hillary says. “It’s like a flapper’s dress made of bronze beads.”

These sleek light fixtures evoke feelings of comfort and warmth…

“Peach is often overlooked in design, so I wanted to use it to add warmth and surprise to the dining room,” says interior designer Hillary Rondero, who used silk grass cloth to create a focal point wall. She commissioned artist Kiah Denson to create an abstract painting cued by the room’s color palette.

Like most American families, mine spends much of our time in the kitchen—cooking, eating, working. It’s the hub of our home and our…

Lighting is like jewelry for a room, a finishing touch that makes a space sparkle with beauty and personality. In this monochromatic living room complete with a peacock blue mohair velvet sofa, designers Louis Pepin and Jean Turcotte varied just the fabric textures for tactile interest. This led to not only a statement sitting area but also the opporutnity to indulge in expressive flourishes like the gorgeous chandelier fabricated in Venice, featuring accents in—what else?—blue.

Everything is in its place in the small, but well-appointed bath of this Alabama home. Designer Andrew Brown created interest in the white palette with slight variations in color tones, texture, and cabinetry details. Overhead, a prismatic fixture adds a contemporary feel to the classic look.

What’s with LED bulbs? Which bulbs work best for different tasks? How much light will a bulb produce?

The rear wall of this living room shows a great play of contrasts. On one side of French doors, a curvaceous French mirror reflects the lines of the molding. Opposite, a midcentury modern chair and metallic arched floor lamp counterbalance an antique oil painting. “Not every piece should be the same,” says decorator Jan Ware. “Choose one fussy piece and temper it with clean lines. Similarly, pair an antique with something contemporary.”

Chairs with iconic midcentury-modern silhouettes pull up to a rustic farm table in Sally and Mark Wheat’s breakfast room. Like that stylish light fixture? Homeowner Mark made it. “Designer Lindsey Adelman makes these fabulous chandeliers,” Sally says. “Several years ago she posted DIY instructions for one. I forgot about it until Mark surprised me with one.”
