May 22, 2013 (San Diego) The San Diego fires are mostly in our rear view mirror. We are now in what specialists call the Recovery Phase. Yet, in Arizona, we have five major fires burning. The worst of them is the “slide fire.” Yet, in the coverage last week, and right now, there are two words missing: Climate Change.
It is as if were in a collective denial that this is happening. We need, collectively, to wake up to the reality and stop denying that there is a scientific consensus on this. The Climate is changing, and not necessarily for the better. These fire fights have to be connected to this new reality. They are, quite brutally honest, part of the new adaptation we need to live with.
Our political class needs to stop running away from it. It does not matter if this is at the local city council, or the President of the United States, or Speaker of the House. We need to do more than just talk in platitudes. We also need to recognize that the solutions to the climate crisis are not pure either. So while we work on how to create policies, we need to recognize the policy reality.
I understand why they run away from it. K street is a powerful critter. They do buy politicians. Some of our leaders come from “energy states,” where energy is king, and regulations are seen as the enemy. No matter that a few very wealthy people are getting even more wealthy and leaving behind death and destruction in their wake.
We humans need to overcome our very short term vision, and imagine what the world will look like in a hundred years, and how to prevent the worst of this. This is also a sign of intelligence. I have no idea if we humans will be able to do that.
