Aug. 22, 2014 (La Jolla) Today the Raise Up San Diego Coalition held a news conference with Council President Pro Tem Sherri Lightner. During the event she said that “unfortunately, there is a campaign of well-funded big businesses trying to take away the raises of hard-working San Diegans,” said Lightner. “Some well-paid corporate folks are sending people out to your neighborhood and your local grocery store. They will ask you to sign a petition. Please don’t sign it.”
Council President Todd Gloria released a video recording yesterday where a signature gatherer is heard saying that the signatures were to make San Diego raise the minimum wage. The votes at council already did that.
This coalition includes many hard workingwomen, for whom the sick leave ordinance will boost their pay by 21 percent, and give sick leave to 44 percent of working women. These women do not presently have any access to sick leave.
Organizations in attendance at the news conference included Run Women Run and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest
