Did Shirley Owen Step Down at Zaft’s Office?\Acaso Shirley Owen Renuncio de la Oficina de Zaft?

Dec. 25, 2014 (San Diego) We were working on the year in review and the silent demonstration at the Inauguration is part of our year in review. While checking Lorie Zapf’s website for spellings, we found one-person absent from her staff. That was Shirley Owen.

Owen is the staffer that was suspended after she called protesters “f..king idiots” and “I wanted to shoot them.” A KPBS reporter who broke the story overheard her.

We at Reporting San Diego are wondering if her absence from the staff site means that Owen was either quietly let go, or quietly resigned. After all, there have been multiple calls for this, and we know her staff is known for mocking protesters.

Being the 25th of December, in the middle of the Winter Break, I am also wondering if the office decided to do this quietly hopping none of us would notice.

Oh and you too can go check this out here.

  1. It’d be ingenuous for them to think people would just forget this incident. Nothing less than Owen’s removal is acceptable. She has the attitude of a master, not a public servant. We got enough of those already.

  2. As one of the silent protestors at the event and member of the San Diego Socialist Campaign, I say “FIRE SHIRLEY OWEN”. San Diego needs to fire Lorie Zapf and the other Councilmembers that have kept quiet on this abhorrent hateful behavior. The words expressed by the council and their staff are to be held accountable in a social democracy. No impunity for police brutality or bankrupt politicians. David Alvarez and Marty Emerald did not acknowledge us. They have been quiet on the issue and they are “OUR” direct representatives. People of color in power and leadership roles must denounce wrongful behavior by police and staff members. The hesitation in addressin the matter already tells us that to them our lives don’t matter. Hence, perpetuating the stereotype which keeps us social second class status. The working poor and impoverished being worth-less-than a police officer…..

  3. Just because she does not appear on Zapf”s website does not mean that she no longer works for Lori or somewhere else in the City.
