East County Democratic Club Focuses on the Social Safety Net

The East County Democratic Club (ECDC) offers an opportunity to learn about the social safety net, at its February 19, meeting. Speaking on the local benefits available is Chris “Doc” Wood, an employee of the San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) for the past 26 years. The location for the meeting is Coco’s Restaurant in El Cajon.

Wood began his work for HHSA as a general relief recipient, in the Logan Heights Family Resource Center (FRC) in 1989.   Because of the promise shown in his work project, Wood was encouraged to apply for a position. He began his career as an intermediate clerk typist in 1989.   Over time and five office postings, Wood was able to assume the position he now holds in the El Cajon FRC. His current position allows him to direct applicants for social services benefits to various professionals, who assume responsibility for determining who is qualified to receive benefits.

Wood graduated from Springfield North High School, Ohio, in 1974. Thereafter, he studied psychology and physiology at Cerro Coso College during 1977-1978. He achieved certification in broadcasting journalism from International Broadcasting College, in Dayton, Ohio, in 1979.   He used this credential as a basis for employment in both civilian and Navy broadcasting during 1979 – 1984.

The public, as well as club members, may participate in this informational meeting that allows questions from the attendees, as well as the speaker’s prepared message. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. For those who want to attend and join the members and guests in socializing and dining, the start time is 6 p.m. The address of the restaurant is 1025 Fletcher Parkway, El Cajon, CA 92020.
