Dec 6, 2015 (WASHINGTON) In a rare White House address President barack Obama addressed the nation from the Oval Office. In the 15 minute address the President presented the strategy that is under use to pursue the Islamic State (ISIL).
Obama said, “we will prevail by being strong and smart, resilient and relentless.” He also said that since the attacks on 911 intelligence, the military and police have disputed countless attacks, in the United States and abroad. He also said that since 911 terrorist groups have changed their approach into simpler acts of mass violence “like the mass shootings that are all too common in our society.” Not only the attack on San Bernardino, but also earlier this year in Chattanooga, or the Fort Hood attack.
He asked Congress to prevent people on the no fly list from buying weapons. “Make it harder,” Obama said, to buy assault weapons.”
Obama also said that “we are putting in place stronger screening for those who come to America without a visa.” This is to screen to see if they have travelled to war zones. He is also ordering both the Department of State and Homeland Security to revise the standards for the visa issued to one of Tashfeeq Malik. It was a K-1 visa.
He also, once again, asked Congress to vote and authorize the continuing operations in Syria. IF they believe that the United States is at war, they should vote for it.
The President said that abroad there is a multi pronged approach to pursue this war. This is as follows:
“First, our military will continue to hunt down terrorist plotters in any country where it is necessary.” The President also said that allied countries, such as France, England and Germany have increased their contribution to the campaign.
“Second, we will continue to provide training and equipment to tens of thousands of Iraqi and Syrian forces fighting ISIL on the ground.”
“Third, we are working with friends and allies to stop ISIL’s operations. To disrupt plots, to cut off their finances, and prevent them from recruiting more fighters.” He added that since the attacks on Paris, there is far more intelligence sharing with European allies, as well as trying to help Turkey control the border with Syria.
“Fourth, with American leadership the International community has begun a process and timeline to pursue timelines and a political resolution to the Syrian conflict.” This will free all nations, including the Russians, to pursue the fight against ISIS, which is the common enemy.
The president also addressed the self radicalization and said that while as Americans we cannot betray our values of religious tolerance, Muslim communities have to face this problem. The president did say though that ISIL is a small fringe group and that most of the victims of ISIL around the world are Muslim.
This is not a war between Islam and the United States, but a very specific war with radicals. But the danger of self radicalization is there, and muslim communities around the world and the United States, have to guard against it.
