Jan 8, 2016 (MEXICO CITY) Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto first informed the people that El Chapo was in custody in a twitter post.
The news was a welcomed surprise, since El Chapo is considered one of the most dangerous cartel leaders. It also led to a short announcement by the President at the National Palace in Mexico City. He was flaked by the security chiefs as well as the Secretary of the Navy and the Army.
Pena Nieto congratulated the personnel involved, and said that “Mexico confirms that her institutions have the capacity to confront and overcome those who threaten the peace of Mexican families.” El Chapo was captured during a shooting in The city of Los Mochis is at the heart of the territory the Sinaloa Cartel controls. Mexican Marines carried out the mission, with possible help from US intelligence.
Pena Nieto also said “this operation has led to the capture of 98 out of the 122 most wanted, that represent a threat to Mexican society.”
At this point it is not clear where El Chapo will serve the rest of his jail sentence. He has escaped twice and while the United States would like to see him extradited, this is not clear yet.
The Mexican Navy was preparing to fly him to Mexico City to present him to assembled press. His future is at this point in the air. Though Mexico has extradited high level cartel members to the United States. Among them was Edgar Valdez Villareal “La Barbie”, who was extradited after El Chapo’s escape.
Update: The Mexican Federal government has announced they intend to extradite Guzman Loera to the United States.
