Feb 13, 2016 (WEST TEXAS) According to multiple media reports Justice Anthony Scalia was found dead at a luxury resort in West Texas. According to officials it appears to be a natural death. He was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch in West Texas, and when he did not come out for breakfast a staff member went to check on him and found the body.
He was the most conservative Associate Justice and was considered the lynch pin in reversing the Warren Court liberal revolution. He was also appointed to the High Court by President Ronald Reagan in his last year in office.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement “He was the solid rock who turned away so many attempts to depart from and distort the Constitution,” Abbott said. “We mourn his passing, and we pray that his successor on the Supreme Court will take his place as a champion for the written Constitution and the Rule of Law. Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to his family, and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”
The next step for President Barack Obama is unclear, but an appointment at this point would probably be stalled by the United States Senate, since an appointment by a center left president is expected to be far more liberal than Justice Scalia. It would change the balance of power in the Supreme Court, and if the Senate holds the court without a nomination until after the election this could hold the court to a non functioning body.
