#WhichHillary Censored?

Final update. A poster pointed to a Daily Koss Diary, which took me straight to this story at Politico. Here is a direct quote from the article:

Research I have been directing in recent years suggests that Google, Inc., has amassed far more power to control elections—indeed, to control a wide variety of opinions and beliefs—than any company in history has ever had. Google’s search algorithm can easily shift the voting preferences of undecided voters by 20 percent or more—up to 80 percent in some demographic groups—with virtually no one knowing they are being manipulated, according to experiments I conducted recently with Ronald E. Robertson .

This is quite a troubling article and offers a historic example in the United States. It is worth your time to read it, and at this point we should score this as quite probable that something like this is occurring.

Update 2: A member of twitter just gave an explanation for why they think this is happening. We just report on this as social media observers.

plain and simple. This is an issue and it will be brought to light.

Update, 22:02 PM, #WhichHillary is back at trending in San Diego.

Feb 25, 2016 (San Diego) If true, we have seen this in the past. The #somos132 was censored, and by censored we mean taken off trending maps by twitter. Now users at Twitter are claiming this is happening to #WhichHillary.

Here, a sample of tweets.

, clearing a hashtag won’t do anything to stop the thread, it’ll just hurt your brand.

, top trend, removed from Twitter while out-trending GOP debate!

We did check the trend maps ourselves and the hashtag has indeed gone missing. The activity on it has not though and one of the theories is that this was done in prime time to reduce or suppress activity by posters. Given the hashtag has appeared on many media publications, that might be a fools errand. That said, this problematic on it’s own.

  1. “That said, this problematic on it’s own.”

Incorrect usage of “it’s”. Supposed to be “its”

  2. The Guerrilla Socialists is the largest Socialists social media presences on the internet. We are popular enough to take over hashtags like #ImWithHer, #Hillary2016, #UniteBlue.
We had been controlling those hashtags when Black Lives Matter dropped their video last night. When we saw the hashtag at the end of the video we called for a twitter bomb of #WhichHillary. We contacted all the groups that we connected with to bomb the hashtag, by morning it was #1.
Today at midday while #WhichHillary was booming, twitter suspended the Guerrilla Socialists account. We’re allowed to log in check messages, but we can’t respond to them or post. We have been a torn in the side of the Clinton Machine and I think the must of pulled strings to take us down.
There are rumors #WhichHillary was censored in other ways, just google it. We can tell you without a doubt we were locked down and continued to be locked down. We have received no information from Twitter just dead silence. We’re asking for your help to shame Twitter into allowing us to exert our political speech, once again. Trust me #WhichHillary would have been much worse, because we would have targeted all other Hillary hashtags with instances of how she has flip flopped all over the place.
Look at @GuerrillaDems and see our posts and the timing of our posts. We aren’t harassing and we just distribute information Hillary doesn’t own hashtags and we aren’t afraid to make that point a fact. There is no reason for them to lock us down. Please help shame Twitter.

  3. How scummy of Twitter. When you censor speech, you’re not making it less popular. You’re tellignthe world you fear the message! #feeltheBern

  4. I don’t see a tie-in between the allegation that Google is gaming the system to Twitter censorship? FWIW Google having influence on elections isn’t something that they’re sitting around plotting about. Anyone who knows anything about Google knows that the search results are provided via search algorithms that are constantly being tweaked to prevent being manipulated.

    • The politico story indicates that they might. And you and I will not be the wiser and they say they are not doing it. I am going to be nice… because it is entirely possible they are not aware of it, never mind the research.

  5. There are also no #WhichHIllary story on Google news Feed (top stories had Hillary Clinton link but no stories linked to #WhichHillary )
