Update 7:50 President Rafael Correa was still in Rome for the same conference that Senator Bernie Sanders attended. He told in a tweet to the citizens of Peru that they will be back in the afternoon. They are leaving at 10 in the morning Rome time and are expected to arrive then.

Update: This is a photo of the damage at the Guayaquil airport. According to local media people ran out of the airport as soon as the quake hit. People present at the airport also spoke of lamps falling. There was reportedly a panic.

April 16, 2016 (QUITO, ECUADOR) The city of Quito was hit by a major quake. According to the United States Geological Service it was 27km SSE of Muisne, Ecuador with an intensity of 7.8 in the Richter scale. It was also pretty shallow with a depth of 10 km, that be 6.21 miles. This is capable of doing major damage. There is a Tsunami alert for the coastal areas of Colombia, Costa Rica and Ecuador.
According to the USGS the quake might have been felt by 15.2 million people, and can cause severe damage.
The earthquake has caused the airport at Quito to be evacuated. Telephone and electric services are down. The City of Manta has at least one building that has collapsed. One bridge collapsed in the city of Guayaquil according to the Fire Department. We are attaching the Tweet, and will translate.
