June 10, 2016 (San Diego) On June 9 Janitors and allies marched downtown, This is the day negotiations started between the union and the workers. The union is allied with the Service Employee International Union (SEIU), and there are a few things they want in the new contract.
- Better wages.
- Medical insurance.
- A guarantee that sexual harassment and assaults will stop.
From the press release, we learn that: “Janitors fight for fair wages and protections against economic abuse and sexual exploitation of immigrant women. After weeks of negotiations with janitorial contracting companies including PARAGON JANITORIAL, ABM, ABLE and other contractors, San Diego janitors authorized their bargaining committee to proceed with a strike to protest unlawful practices.”
These practices are a serous problem and Janitors have been negotiating with their employees, To make a point that they are willing to strike, they blocked the entrance to one of the downtown Wells Fargo banks. Employees and some union leaders were arrested by San Diego Police. There were a total of eight arrests.
