The incident happened shortly before 11:00 at night, in the Southcrest neighborhood at 3200 Acacia Grove Way. According to the Chief Shelly Zimmerman the officers requested “emergency cover now,” after a stop. When other officers arrived on the scene they were found with multiple gun shot wounds to the chest. The officer who died was transported by fellow officers in a squad car to a local area hospital where there were heroic efforts to save his life by medical personnel. The second officer was transported by medics to a second area hospital.
A suspect was taken into custody in a somewhat open area, and was also transported to an area hospital for medical attention.
Zimmernan also asked media to afford the family of the officers their privacy. She reminded the public that “officers were there protecting the city,” like they do every day.
She also said that they are not sure if there is a second suspect, but they are doing a full search of the area. She did not go into details. The chief also said that there will be a press conference in the morning, but they do not know exactly when
We have a short update. The wounded officer is “expected to recover,” according to Chief Zimmernan. His wife has been at his bedside. He also has a 19 month old child.
SWAT surrounded a home in the Shelltown area earlier this morning, looking for a suspect, according to NBC San Diego.

I can’t even begin to express how devastated I was to wake up to the tragic news of two officers being shot in my district last night. My heart goes out to the family and friends of the fatally shot officer, and I will continue to pray for the second officer. This is insane. We have to seek peace, understanding and love in our neighborhoods. For everyone
