August 3, 2016 (San Diego) Reporting San Diego sat down with Mark Bartlett and Nadia Susana Contreras to speak of issues close to their hearts. To be frank, issues that affect their community in deep ways. We talked about the community park they are creating. We talked about mass incarceration, and gentrification. We talked about how all this affects the community and also children.

The conversation has been spit into two pieces of video. The first video mostly speaks of community and the community park. The second about mass incarceration and the private prison industry. The effects are deep and span generations. We just did a very light edit on the video, taking the first few seconds out of each, that got both conversations going.
As background, both have been engaged in an ongoing hunger strike to bring positive changes to the half way houses managed by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). Many activists have raised the issue that the private prison system only cares about one thing and one thing only, keeping bodies in those beds. We also talked around the edges of the Crime Bill of 1996 and the effect it has had, as well as the effect mass incarceration has on family destruction.
