BREAKING NEWS: Wild Fire Leads to Sig Alert in North County

August 9, update:

8h8 hours ago  [update] CAL FIRE and local cooperators will have 10 engines and 6 crews (120 firefighters) assigned today.

It is also 25 percent contained.

8:15 update: Incident Command reports that forward rate of spread has stopped. They are still going to be doing extensive overhaul and keep units on scene for at least 20 hours. When you drive by, watch for fire crews.

Via the CHP we got clarification on the closure. 3-4 lanes will be closed. These are the ones next to the edge of the roadway, and 1-2 will be opened, those are the two next to the center of the roadway, aka the fast lanes. Please be careful, fire crews will be working.

Update 7:00 PM, this is going to be somewhat long term. But two southbound lanes have reopened.

7m7 minutes agoCalifornia, USA  [update] 2 Southbound lanes on the I-15 have reopened. Firefighters expect to work next 24 hours.

Fire located along I-15 Southbound in North County


Unincorporated North San Diego County, Calif. –


On August 8, 2016 at approximately 3:03 PM, a brush fire was reported on Interstate 15 near Gopher Canyon Road, in an Unincorporated Community of North San Diego County. Local Fire Department personnel responded immediately to find the brush fire growing.

According to on-scene Fire Department personnel, there has been approximately 20 acres affected. Emergency personnel are actively involved in fighting this. This fire has two hot spots.

With the assistance of Cal-Trans, we have now opened the left two lanes. The right two lanes are closed until further notice for fire department and other emergency personnel.

The closure will be from southbound I-15 at Gopher Canyon Road to Deer Springs Road. It will be in effect from now until we receive word from the Fire Department lead official that it is safe to do so.


The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

There are limited evacuations in place, and here they are from the San Diego Sheriffs and the County.

Brush Fire – Unincorporated San Marcos

This is the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department with an emergency message and evacuation information on Monday, August 8, 2016.

A small brush fire is burning west of Interstate 15 at Gopher Canyon Road near the Lawrence Welk Resort in unincorporated San Marcos. At this time, CAL FIRE says only two homes are threatened. Sheriff’s Deputies have notified these residents about the fire.

According to the CHP, southbound Interstate 15 at Gopher Canyon Road has been closed down as firefighters work to put out the flames. Please avoid this area if you can.

August 8, 2016 (San Diego North County) North bound interstate 15 is closed in Escondido by Gopher canyon due to a wild fire. According to CALTRANS SB lanes are closed.

2h2 hours ago All southbound lanes on I-15 at Gopher Canyon are closed due to a brush fire. Traffic is detoured to Old 395.
The fire is up to 20 acres, and air units are on it, as well as ground crews. Visibility is very low due to smoke and there is conflicting information as to whether there are structures threatened.
The fire is dubbed the Gopher Fire. and CAL FIRE reports it is on scene.

As of 5:20 the CHP log reports that they might be preparing to open lanes, but expect major delays.
CAL FIRE reports the fire is at 20 acres with at least three structures under threat.
