California Repeals Almost 20 Year Ban on Bilingual Education

Nov 9, 2016 (San Diego) With the passage of Proposition 58, the state has repealed an almost 20-year ban on bilingual education in the state of California It effectively repeals Proposition 227 passed in 1998, known as the English Only in Public Schools Initiative.

This will allow public schools to teach children in their own language, but will also mandate that children develop English proficiency since this is essential to function in the American economy. With this California joins advanced economies that teach their children several languages, allowing the workforce to effectively function in a global economy.
