April 24, 2017 (VALPARAISO, CHILE) A strong earthquake, 7.1 in the Richter scale, with a depth of 10 km, or 6 miles, hit Chile. It also happened in the open sea about 38 km from Valparaiso, 23, 6 miles.
So far there are no reports of damage, and the initial tsunami alert has been lifted.
That region has had 120 earthquakes, including this one, over the last 48 hours. Due to damage from previous earthquakes and living in one of the most seismic active zones on the planet, Chile has very strong engineering standards.
From Twitter, we have some evidence of very minor damage.
Facebook also activated their app in the area, allowing residents to let others know they were fine.
