June 23, 2017 (San Diego) The jury found Robert Branch, 27, non-guilty of all charges. These stemmed from a road rage incident that started on Interstate 8 and ended up on Lambda Drive in San Diego. The prosecution said that Branch refused to follow the executive orders from now retired Sheriff’s Detective Paul Ward, who was driving an unmarked sheriff’s vehicle and he was wearing civilian clothing.
During a press conference this morning Branch credits him taping most of the incident on his I-phone, otherwise, it would have been his word against that of the officer, and likely he would have been convicted. Charges originally were not going to be filed by the District Attorney, however, they were filed after Branch filed a civil claim in Federal Court.
Branch still faces charges from a separate incident stemming from messages to a woman in 2013, This case was separated from this case by the judge three weeks ago. They will be going to conference on this on June 29. However, his legal team is going to proceed with the civil case against the county in Federal Court.
