Dec 1, 2017 (San Diego) First of all, to our donors, thank you. You have allowed us to continue doing what we do, on a shoestring budget.
However, with the looming tax bill, we will likely not be able to keep the lights on for much longer, unless more people step up to the plate. The economic reality is simple, media has had a hard time in recent years and Reporting San Diego is not an exception. Looking at our books, it is clear that it may be time to shut the paper down.
We have gotten some limited support (again, thank you) but the truth is that most people read the paper, without donating. This is hardly sustainable, and the time for us to reach that decision is fast coming. The end of the calendar year, the passage of the new tax bill, and the end of Net Neutrality will provide a perfect storm.
We love to do what we do. We also love policy (to our chagrin not too many others do). But if we do not get donations, this will be the end of the road for us.
The staff of Reporting San Diego.
