Art Deco is an artistic movement which took off in the 20s and is distinguished by its clean, geometric lines, in contrast to “Art Nouveau” full of scrolls and stylistic excess. Lamps were not immune to Art Deco and are then transformed into objects of art adorning living rooms and desks, offering decorative possibilities without equal.

At the beginning of year 20, Art Deco lamps mounts symbolize industrial development. It contains chromium, nickel alloys, aluminum, steel or bronze. Reflectors are often sandblasted glass for search of transparency and translucency – what Jean Perzel mastered perfectly. Master glazier, he developed a frosted glass and sandblasted on the inside of its Art Deco lamps, externally adding a layer of glass enamel for decorative purposes. The amazing geometric abstractions of these Art Deco lamps are still produced by Atelier Jean Perzel and are still fashionable today than it was in 1925 at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris.

In 1931, Jean Perzel built a beautiful Art Deco building, by Michel Roux-Spitz, rue de la Cité Universitaire in Paris, where our design office, manufacturing facilities and showroom are still gathered today. Each Art Deco fixture fitting in this selection, like the more modern pieces, requires about two months of artisanal manufacture and has respected, for more than three generations, the tradition established by Jean Perzel himself.

During the 20s and the 30s, Jean Perzel was one of the founders and major manufacturers of Art Deco lighting. He participated in various exhibitions and international competitions where he won numerous awards. Thanks to gain notoriety in the field, he quickly became part of jurors.

Jean Perzel was a true pioneer of Art Deco lamps at that time. He was able to express a rarely achieved balance between the nobility and grace, wealth and sobriety. And since, the collection of  Jean Perzel Art Deco lamps has maintained and revisit the Art Deco style throughout the twentieth century, constantly proving its timelessness. For nearly a century, the Atelier Jean Perzel magnifies lighting and perpetuates the Art Deco creations thanks to Art Deco lamps.

Art Deco lamps stand out, as this artistic movement in general, by their geometric lines and simplicity of their materials.

Through its expertise and its desire to highlight environments and faces thanks to diffuse light, the collection of Art Deco ceiling lamps by Jean Perzel remains as timeless and modern as in 1923, when his workshop was created. For nearly a century, Atelier Jean Perzel magnifies lighting and perpetuates Art Deco through Art deco ceiling lamps creations.

Art Deco ceiling lamps and chandeliers have been largely influenced by the Art Deco movement living an explosion in France during the interwar period. Indeed, for the first time, the Art Deco movement invests the full spectrum of daily life objects, including ceiling lights, transforming them into functional art adapted to the needs of modern life.

Find here a selection of our most beautiful lighting in the Art Deco style, including lamps, sconces, ceiling lights, suspensions or floor lamps.

During the 20s, glassmakers will show their ingenuity to create Art Deco chandeliers both functional and luxurious, now powered by the electricity fairy. It was the case of Jean Perzel, glassmaker by profession. He became precursor, in 1923, of creating Art Deco ceiling lamps with soft and indirect lighting. He developed a frosted and sandblasted glass on the outside of the reflector in order to maximize the light source while keeping a diffuse light. As for the mountings, they are also breaking with Art Nouveau : the Art Deco ceiling lamps dropped the decorated and floral frames, for clean and geometric shapes, which are now made of chromed metal, silver or bronze. Nearly a century later, nothing has changed in the workshops of Jean Perzel. The building in Paris’ 14th arrondissement, designed by architect Roux-Spitz, still house Jean Perzel showroom and workshop where Art Deco chandeliers and other lighting fixtures are manufactured.

Art Deco lamps are the work of decorative artists seeking perfection in simple shapes, a real confusion between art and craft creations.

The style of Art Deco ceiling lamps, contrast with their Art Nouveau predecessors, always very ornamental : they are now more upright, symmetrical, geometric or angular.

Light craftsmen specializing in Art Deco lighting and art lighting since the 1920’s, we have created, over time, lighting models with unmatched timeless luxury. Jean Perzel was a true precursor of modern lighting by expressing a perfect balance between nobility and grace, wealth and sobriety. And since then, the Atelier Jean Perzel collection has perpetuated and revisited the style of the Art Deco lighting throughout the 20th century, highlighting their modernity and permanent relevance.
