Kitchen down lights are very popular as they are versatile, can be adjustable and you can have as many or as few as you would like. They are easy to install, come in a variety of styles including adjustable and eyeball and are available in a huge range of finishes. They provide good targeted light and are dimmable. They are however expensive to run and generate a lot of heat, unless you use LED or fluorescent GU10 light bulbs in them. Down lights can be used in conjunction with any other type of kitchen light. They can be positioned around the edge to target worktops or other areas where a direct light is required. Click here to view our range of recessed lighting. Further information about downlights can be found in our article entitled Recessed downlights explained.

Some of us will remember the dreadful fluorescent lights of the past. Typically, they were a plain white metal body with a bare fluorescent tube. They would hum and buzz with a plink-plink until they finally illuminated. Thankfully, those days are behind us. Today’s modern fluorescent lights are fitting with electronic control gear that eliminates the buzzing and flickering completely. The light output from a fluorescent fitting cannot be overstated. It is between four and six times more efficient than any other lamp source, making them very energy efficient. These factors, coupled with contemporary styling and long lamp life make them very hard to overlook.

Good kitchen lighting, from an aesthetic and functional standpoint, incorporates both ambient and task lighting. This method of layering the light is important for achieving positive results in all types of living and working spaces.

These are best lit with bright, shadowless light. LED strips, light bars and under-cabinet puck lights are replacing fluorescent tubes and are particularly well suited for this because of their large surface area and high lumens per watt. You want to get the fixture close to the task area, (in kitchens this would be counters, sinks, and tables), so mounting the lights on the underside of the upper cabinets is convenient. In the case of an island or peninsula counter tops, with no upper cabinets to attach lights to, you need to use hanging pendant style fixtures or project light from the ceiling. If ceiling mounts are used then your choice will probably be LED or incandescent lamps (either in track or recessed fixtures). A wider variety of quality lighting products are becoming availabe in the home lighting market with LEDs being the most efficient. Halogen which are usually called MR16s have very defined beam patterns and cast hard shadows. This can make them a poor choice for a task light but excellent for accent lighting. The LED or halogen PAR30 lamp has a good blend of efficiency, performance, and aesthetics if you need to project the light on to the task area. Since PAR lamps are line voltage (120V), they do not require transformers like the 12V MR16.

Ambient light is the general, overall light that fills in shadows, reduces contrast, and lights vertical surfaces to give the space a brighter feel. Ambient light is what you need for casual activities in your rooms. If the kitchen has light colored surfaces and lots of windows you should have plenty of natural ambient light during the day. But kitchens are used from before dawn until after midnight — we can’t rely on windows and skylights. Fluorescent tubes are well suited to the job of providing ambient light. They provide broad, even illumination and their efficiency makes it possible to fill the space with light without turning it into an oven. Choose a color temperature of 3000K or 3500K for a warmer, more inviting appearance. You can put the tubes in a central fixture but you may want to try some other strategies, like placing them on top of the upper cabinets to indirectly reflect off a light colored ceiling. If you have at least 12 inches of space from the top of the upper cabinets to the ceiling, this is an inexpensive way to brighten up a kitchen. Or, maybe you have a custom pot rack hanging over an island and can build lighting into it to reflect off the ceiling and down onto the island.

If your home was built in the last forty years or so, the chances are that it will have lower ceilings than older properties. Lower ceilings were introduced to save energy in heating costs by reducing the air volume that required warming. Most modern flush kitchen lights are fluorescent with a few containing ordinary incandescent lamps. They are an excellent choice if you have a lower ceiling.

Ensuring that your kitchen is adequately lit is really quite simple, especially with a little help from a friendly team such as ours, but does require a little thought and planning to get it right. Essentially, kitchen lighting can be divided into three main categories, ambient, accent and task lighting. Kitchen ceiling lights can fall into both ambient and accent lighting. Ambient lighting creates an indirect overall light source to enable you to carry out everyday tasks, whilst accent lighting highlights particular areas of interest or certain objects within the kitchen. A good example would be a pendant light hanging over a breakfast bar or dining table. Our selection of kitchen ceiling lights fall into four main categories, fluorescent, flush, pendants and down lights.

Accent lighting is what gives our space a third dimension, adding to the quality of the space. Accent lighting is used sparingly on those special home objects that we want people to notice and admire. Accent lighting is usually done with spot lights, and the MR16 lamp mentioned earlier is one of the best. You may be lighting artwork, architectural details, collectibles, or a food presentation area.

Pendants look fantastic in any kitchen. For those of us lucky enough to have high ceilings, they can be positioned almost anywhere to create the effect we would like. In reality, most of us are only able to use pendants over a breakfast bar or dining table. They perform well as accent lighting and also help to outline different areas of the kitchen, for example, the dining area.
