Houzz Tour: An Architectural Relic Thrives in the Heartland of Ohio

Walkways, decks, raised beds and stepped areas all shine a little brighter picked out by rope lights. Contemporary landscapes and courtyards carry this look better than a more natural, cottage-style or wild-edged garden.

WHAT TO CONSIDER: Rope lights are usually LED and therefore tend to be cost effective and low-energy. There are also solar-powered options on the market. It’s important to look for a robust product – rope lights designed for the Christmas market or occasional party won’t last, so make sure you purchase a model designed for outdoor landscaping use.

This home’s bridge was illuminated from a lensed linear in-floor light strip to keep the ceiling clean. From the exterior, warm glows reflect off the wood ceiling from an invisible source. This space shows how one can effectively highlight show pieces, read a book and illuminate a hallway. You simply know it when lighting is done right. Mistake 5. Forgetting to incorporate ambient, task AND accent lighting.

Lighting designers understand that all well-designed spaces incorporate different types of light. Ambient light is general lighting for walking around, conversing, and identifying objects.

Replace a ceiling fixture with monorail lighting in a hallway to create an instant art gallery. The design flexibility of today’s lighting systems allows so many possibilities. In this hallway, a simple and modern track light is used to light an art collection.

This solution would be a great way to highlight a family photo gallery or create a showcase for kids’ artwork.

This bridge incorporates linear floor lighting. This is a good example of pathway lighting and visual cueing. This idea can be transferred to a regular hallway using the same lighting type, or you can also use recessed floor lights to create a similar effect.

Lights placed closer to the wall and with an etched diffuser should reduce or eliminate any glare.

“The entry was once dark and narrow – we widened it and introduced more natural light and storage.” The collection is bold, colourful and modern and has found a fitting gallery-like home in the wide entrance hall and the connecting living/dining area.

The Peaks View residence is sited near Wilson, Wyoming, in a grassy meadow, adjacent to the Teton mountain range. The design solution for the project had to satisfy two conflicting goals: the finished project must fit seamlessly into a neighborhood with distinctly conservative design guidelines while satisfying the owners desire to create a unique home with roots in the modern idiom.

Within these constraints, the architect created an assemblage of building volumes to break down the scale of the 6,500 square foot program. A pair of two-story gabled structures present a traditional face to the neighborhood, while the single-story living pavilion, with its expansive shed roof, tilts up to recognize views and capture daylight for the primary living spaces. This trio of buildings wrap around a south-facing courtyard, a warm refuge for outdoor living during the short summer season in Wyoming. Broad overhangs, articulated in wood, taper to thin steel “brim” that protects the buildings from harsh western weather. The roof of the living pavilion extends to create a covered outdoor extension for the main living space. The cast-in-place concrete chimney and site walls anchor the composition of forms to the flat site. The exterior is clad primarily in cedar siding; two types were used to create pattern, texture and depth in the elevations.
While the building forms and exterior materials conform to the design guidelines and fit within the context of the neighborhood, the interiors depart to explore a well-lit, refined and warm character. Wood, plaster and a reductive approach to detailing and materials complete the interior expression. Display for a Kimono was deliberately incorporated into the entry sequence. Its influence on the interior can be seen in the delicate stair screen and the language for the millwork which is conceived as simple wood containers within spaces. Ample glazing provides excellent daylight and a connection to the site. Photos: Matthew Millmanlove the stairs and all the wood… – amellick24

This sofa-chaise combination sports a track arm with a straight cushion. This arm is for you if you like a more contemporary look; it’s rarely used with a T-cushion, because most people think the straight cushion goes better with a contemporary design.

Shop track arm sofas on Houzz Although each manufacturer will tweak the look of these arms in different ways, these are the five basic choices from which most arm and cushion styles are derived.

I love working with antiques and bringing fresh relevance to them in our contemporary lifestyles. The key is to use them fearlessly,’ says Kim. Lighting was a key consideration in the hallway, which features elegant custom-made pendant lighting.

Sculptures, artwork and a large wardrobe for coats and storage complete the space.

Located within the urban core of Portland, Oregon, this 7th floor 2500 SF penthouse sits atop the historic Crane Building, a brick warehouse built in 1909. It has established views of the city, bridges and west hills but its historic status restricted any changes to the exterior. Working within the constraints of the existing building shell, GS Architects aimed to create an “urban refuge”, that provided a personal retreat for the husband and wife owners with the option to entertain on occasion.Curved rail.
