Use canned lights sparingly. I don’t really consider canned lights overhead fixtures. I see them as ambient lighting that should be employed sparingly and purposefully. When using canned lights, people have a tendency to go a bit nuts.
From a design perspective, canned lighting should never be your sole source of light.
Light up the night – If you have a narrow patio squeezed between tall buildings, use the vertical space to hang string lights high, transforming what would be a flaw into a charming feature. Just as with a small interior room, an outdoor space feels bigger and more welcoming when it’s well lit.
Have multiple light sources. Just like indoors, lighting can make or break an outdoor room. For the most flattering glow at an evening soiree, try to include at least three light sources. For instance, hang string lights overhead, light up the fire pit and place a few small landscape lights in the bushes around the edge of the patio.

These tranquil indoor-outdoor spaces are best surrounded by windows, glazed louvres or glass sliding doors to let light shine from the courtyard into adjacent rooms. Consult an architect, interior designer or a builder for advice on how to maximise light penetration in your site, and remember, even a small internal courtyard can make a big difference.

Positive and Negative Space The positive space in this room is represented by the furniture and the plants. While the negative space in this room is represented by the makeshift hallway behind the chair and in front of the stairs. – 20013793

Go for all-out drama – Choose just the wrong shade in just the wrong spot, and coloured LEDs can have a dramatically chilly effect on an interior. Here, however, the layers of blues reds and pinks conjure up a cocoon-like effect and the hall feels warm and welcoming – though perhaps not for the design-shy.
Let layers of light be your friend – do lots of research, picking out warm, inviting spaces lit with coloured LEDs and those that feel cooler and less friendly – let the former shape the brief to your electrician, or hire a great lighting designer.

I like the idea of two lights over dining room table. – julialilley
The courtyard connects evenly with the indoor dining room. A large garden wall and the knotted cedar plank wall make the space feel cozy and intimate.
When buying bulbs, check they are suitable for the job in hand, so you can get the twilight effect you desire – some eco bulbs don’t work properly with dimmer switches. TELL US… How do you prepare your lighting for winter? Share your ideas and photos in the Comments below.
Indoor-outdoor flow. Ranches are usually built on slabs, so they’re level with the yard, and are often laid out in U or L shapes, making them especially conducive to indoor-outdoor living. Take advantage of that by adding French doors, folding doors or retractable sliders.
This is not as practical as fitting wall-mounted lights designed to aid reading, but it will create drama and ensure bedside cabinets remain uncluttered. Browse the pick of perfect pendant lights.

Pendant lights, from chandeliers to single bulbs, typically hang in the centre of the room and are a good starter for general lighting. A single pendant tends to flatten shadows and cast a dim light, though, so consider choosing one on an adjustable flex, hanging a row of pendants or buying a cluster-style design to create a richer light and more flexibility.

Trees can be uplit, and paths can be defined by lights, leading garden visitors through the space and providing interest that can be enjoyed both outdoors and from indoors. Lighting can also be effectively incorporated into water features to add movement (and to keep people from stepping into the pond!).

love, love, love!!!! the lights in this photo!!!! – ellengabla
I love this water feature. The placement of the large stones and rocks and lighting at evening is so soothing. Submerged lighting. If you’ve invested in a water feature for your garden, such as a pond, waterfall or stream, help it shine after the sun goes down with submerged lighting.
The glow of light under burbling water creates a magical effect, softly illuminating the landscape. Lighting designed for water features should be installed by a pro. – chicangel
