Ceiling fans can be ‘art’ In Singapore we often close up our apartments and switch on the air-conditioning, but if you’re lucky enough to live on a high floor, you can open your windows and install ceiling fans.
Fans can now be pieces of art designed to accentuate your decor, or even become a dramatic feature on your ceiling.
DESIGN NEW ENGLAND magazine described Boston designer Lisa K. Tharp’s Coastal Loft interiors – where Beach meets SoHo – as living like “an art gallery by the sea”. Lisa designed this kitchen as the central, sun-drenched gathering spot for the home. First, she added character to the envelope with simple materials, specifying v-groove board cladding on the gable ends and backsplash, beams on the vaulted ceiling, and reclaimed antique heart pine flooring. She designed the cabinetry to hide all appliances – including pair of SubZero refrigerator/freezers, Miele dishwashers and microwave – save the free-standing range, crowned with custom mantle-style hood. She used 2″ thick pale gray concrete to top the 10 foot island, and more antique heart pine on the perimeter counter. Lisa commissioned large scale linen & twine pendants to illuminate the island, and lit the glass upper cabinets like fine art with library sconces. It is important to pick the right fan for your space in terms of style and proportion. A cathedral ceiling in a large-scale room offers an opportunity to add something big and bold, making the fan a major design element.
Add a ceiling fan – Ceiling fans aren’t just for summer; they have an important role to keep you warm in winter too. Because hot air rises, warm air collects towards the ceiling and many fans come with a reverse winter setting that moves this air downward.
This is especially useful when trying to heat areas with high ceilings where lots of hot air will be trapped.
A banana leaf-style fan is a whimsical and fitting addition to rooms with a tropical flair. The blade texture adds a layer of interest, making the fan look more like a special installation. You can find some island fans here.

Ceiling fans and standing fans placed near windows at night can help force the air movement when there is no breeze and a small temperature difference. During the day the added air movement from fans can help the perception of heat, which is tied to humidity.

Become a fan of fans – Any air movement is good, which is why fans have been used since early times to keep things cool, hauling away the warm air and pushing cooler breezes around the room. Ceiling fans come in all sorts of designs from statement to discreet – some even look like old-school palm-leaf originals; many have light fixtures to do double duty in the middle of the ceiling.
